Avalanche Dominate Kings 8-4 in Season Opener

October 1, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Colorado Avalanche opened the season with an 8-4 victory against the Los Angeles Kings.

Offensive Explosion Defines Season Opener at Ball Arena

Opening night brought immediate high-scoring drama as Colorado capitalized on special teams and sustained offensive zone pressure. Brock Nelson opened the scoring at 6:33 of the first period with a power-play goal, driving a shot off the left post and past Darcy Kuemper after Jaden Schwartz set up the sequence. Los Angeles answered when Brian Dumoulin fired a wrist shot glove-side past Blackwood through a screen by Alex Turcotte at 15:14. Parker Kelly regained the lead for Colorado at 17:58, converting a 2-on-1 rush with Fedor Svechkov just three seconds after a Kings penalty expired.

The pace accelerated further in the middle frame. MacKinnon netted a 5-on-3 power-play goal just 23 seconds into the second period off a cross-slot feed from Nazem Kadri. Despite Joel Armia pulling Los Angeles within 3-2 moments later with a short-handed wrist shot, Colorado kept building distance. MacKinnon roofed his second goal of the period at 8:33 off a feed from Martin Necas, and Nicolas Roy chipped home a loose puck during a scramble at 16:01 to make it 5-2.

Trevor Moore cut the deficit to 5-3 with a short-handed goal at 17:50, capitalizing on an airborne puck along the wall to beat Blackwood from the right circle. However, Lehkonen restored a three-goal cushion just 44 seconds later by redirecting a centering pass from Nelson.

Artemi Panarin brought Los Angeles to 6-4 in the third period at 11:51, scoring over Blackwood’s blocker as the extra attacker during a delayed penalty. Gabriel Landeskog answered at 14:03 by burying a rebound off the end wall that deflected in off Quinton Byfield’s skate. Lehkonen capped the scoring with another power-play marker at 15:06, finalizing the 8-4 scoreline.
