The real-world intervention began during a birthday celebration when Sonni Mason witnessed a handbag being snatched following a dispute over a pack of cigarettes in a queue outside a nightclub. Mason, who is from London and works in a café, was wearing a full Batman costume. According to The Guardian, he was accompanied by party guests dressed as Mister Fantastic from the Fantastic Four and Poison Ivy from the Batman franchise.
Rather than attempting immediate vigilante justice, the group acted quickly to involve local authorities. As reported by SWNS, Mason and his fellow costumed friends flagged down a group of police officers conducting routine night-time economy patrols in Norwich before pursuing the suspect through the dark streets.
The Chase and the Perimeter Wall Recovery
The suspect fled the immediate area but quickly abandoned the loot during the pursuit. According to local coverage detailed by The Guardian, a tip-off led the group to discover the stolen bag approximately 300 metres away from the initial snatch site. The thief had tossed the item onto the top of a high flint wall on the perimeter of Norwich Cathedral.
Initial attempts by the group to dislodge the handbag using a roll of toilet paper failed. Bounded by the height of the stone structure, Mason scaled the wall in his full Batman costume, retrieved the bag intact with all its contents, and returned it to the ecstatic owner. A video capturing parts of the incident was later uploaded to Mason’s TikTok account.
Police Confirmation and Public Appeal
A Norfolk police spokesperson confirmed the sequence of events to reporters, stating that officers on routine night-time economy patrols were approached on Saturday, September 19, by a member of the public requesting assistance to locate a missing bag. Following inquiries at the scene, the bag was recovered with all contents intact and returned to its owner.
Reflecting on the unexpected detour from the birthday celebration, Mason told SWNS that the incident reflected the core principles of his chosen character. “That’s what [Batman] is about. He’s a protector,” Mason said. “I just hope more people will be inspired to do the same if they see someone being mugged or feeling uncomfortable on a night out. It shouldn’t take a superhero costume to make you want to do that.”
Mason emphasized that his actions were rooted in assisting others rather than engaging in aggressive pursuits. “I hope I can inspire people to be a little bit more like Batman,” he added. “Not so much the running around in the dark in a costume but helping others out.
