The American Fluor Engineering Group has received the final notification from Barrick Mining to proceed with the development of the Reko Diq copper project in Pakistan.

Fluor was appointed as Barrick’s main partner for engineering, acquisitions, and construction management (EPCM) in April and secured its portion of the contract in the second quarter. The total value of the contract has not been disclosed.

“Fluor and Barrick share a firm commitment to the execution of large-scale mining projects safely, responsibly, and efficiently,” said Harish jammula, President of Mining and Fluor Metals.”Reko Diq will contribute considerably to Pakistan’s economy, with an expected transformative impact on the province of Baluchistan.”

Construction is anticipated to commence by the end of this year, with the first production scheduled for 2028. The mine will be constructed in two phases and is projected to process up to 90 million tons of ore annually.

The project will encompass multiple open-pit mines, as well as transportation and infrastructure facilities to move concentrate and consumables between the site and the port.

“The selection of Fluor as our EPCM partner strengthens our ability to execute the Reko Diq project with the technical rigor, operational discipline, and socio-environmental responsibility that are distinctive hallmarks of both companies,” stated Barrick CEO Mark Bristow. “We look forward to working in close collaboration with Fluor to ensure Reko Diq contributes durable value to capital partners, both local and international,as well as the numerous stakeholders in the country, including the people of Baluchistan and Pakistan.”

Reko Diq, a joint venture between Barrick and Pakistani stakeholders, is expected to have a mine life exceeding 40 years. Fluor’s expertise in executing large-scale copper projects in remote and high-altitude environments will be crucial for the project’s success.
