Barcelona Hit with double Injury Blow: Gavi to Undergo Surgery, Fermín López Sidelined
Barcelona, september 22, 2025 - Barcelona’s positive momentum following a 3-0 victory over Getafe was sharply curtailed today with news of injuries to key midfielders Gavi and Fermín López.Gavi will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, while Fermín López is expected to be out for nearly a month with a muscle injury.
The injuries add to Barcelona’s growing injury list, posing a significant challenge for manager Hansi Flick as the team navigates a demanding schedule across La Liga and Champions League competition. The club confirmed Gavi’s decision to undergo surgery to address a lesion in the internal meniscus of his right knee, a re-occurrence of issues that previously kept him sidelined for 348 days after a November 2023 operation to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and external meniscus in the same knee.
Club medical staff initially recommended conservative treatment for Gavi, but opted for surgery after “intense sport stress tests” revealed the discomfort persisted. The procedure will be performed on Tuesday by Dr. Monllave, who previously operated on Gavi’s knee last year. The club stated the aim is to “guarantee the best recovery and return to the competitive dynamics.”
Fermín López sustained a muscular injury in the left iliac psoas during the closing minutes of the Getafe match, substituting for Ferran Torres. He is projected to miss approximately three weeks, ruling him out of upcoming fixtures against Oviedo, Real Sociedad, PSG, and Sevilla. He could potentially return for the October 18 clash against Girona following the international break.
Currently, Barcelona has five injured players: Gavi, Fermín López, Lamine Yamal, João Cancelo, and Íñigo Martínez.
