Baby Elephant at Columbus Zoo Captivates visitors with Adorable Naps
COLUMBUS, OH – A newborn elephant at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is quickly becoming a fan favourite, and recent video footage of the calf’s sleepy moments is capturing hearts online. The baby elephant, whose name has not been publicly released, is exhibiting typical infant behaviors – seeking comfort from her mother and enjoying frequent naps.
The zoo shared a video showcasing the calf’s naptime routine, which includes snuggling close to her parent and being gently covered with hay for warmth and protection. Like human babies, the elephant is easily disturbed when sleeping and was observed letting out a precious yawn at the end of the video.
“She’s getting tired, and like most babies, she chooses to snuggle up to her parent,” the zoo noted in a social media post accompanying the video. “This baby calf probably feels super safe cuddled up under them.”
While elephants don’t require as much sleep as their human counterparts, rest remains crucial for growth and development. According to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, baby elephants typically sleep around four to six hours a day. The newest member of the herd has already gained over 60 pounds as birth, demonstrating healthy development.
Zoo officials also shared that the calf is already displaying a curious nature, and they plan to continue sharing updates on her progress. The initial report on the sleepy calf appeared on PetHelpful on September 7, 2025.
