The bodies of two newborn babies were discovered in a freezer at a home in Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont, a small town in eastern France, prompting a police investigation and the arrest of a woman in the Paris region. Authorities were alerted on Tuesday after a man found the remains of one infant while at his residence, according to French press agency AFP.
Police subsequently located a second infant’s body at the same location. A woman was taken into custody on Wednesday at approximately 1:00 am in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris, officials confirmed. The relationship between the woman and the deceased infants remains unknown as the investigation continues.
The discovery has deeply shaken the community of Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont, a village of roughly 1,500 residents. Mayor Jean-Claude Tramesel told AFP that he was informed by police of a planned street closure on Tuesday evening to facilitate the investigation. “This is a small village… We always think that these kinds of incidents happen to other people. We are stunned,” he said.
The location of the discovery carries a somber resonance for the area. In 2014, a man shot and killed his nephew in Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont, an event some residents have described as casting a shadow over the village, referring to it as “a cursed village.”
Prosecutor Cédric Logelin is scheduled to hold a press conference at 6:30 pm to provide an update on the proceedings related to the discovery of the infants’ bodies and a bag potentially containing a second set of remains. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have released no further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths or the identity of the woman in custody.
