AWS and Google Cloud Launch Direct Interconnect, Bridging Multi-cloud Environments
SEATTLE, WA – December 6, 2023 – Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud today announced the general availability of a direct interconnect solution enabling seamless, private connectivity between their respective cloud platforms. The offering, initially previewed earlier this year, allows customers to build applications spanning both AWS and Google Cloud with on-demand bandwidth scaling up to 100 Gbps.
Just months after publicly downplaying the need for such a connection, the launch signals a critically important shift in the multi-cloud landscape. Businesses increasingly rely on multiple cloud providers for redundancy, specialized services, and to avoid vendor lock-in, but connecting these environments has traditionally been complex and costly. This new interconnect aims to simplify that process, offering a managed, secure solution activated in minutes with a point-and-click interface.Bandwidth begins at 1 Gbps.
The solution directly addresses a growing demand for interoperability as organizations adopt multi-cloud strategies. AWS offers its own equivalent, AWS Interconnect – multicloud, currently in preview, designed to streamline connectivity with Google Cloud and other major cloud providers.
“This collaboration between AWS and Google Cloud represents a fundamental shift in multi-cloud connectivity,” stated Robert Kennedy, AWS VP of Network Services. “Customers no longer need to worry about any heavy lifting to create their desired connectivity… it’s ready to activate in minutes with a simple point and click.”
The declaration arrives as the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) continues to consider designating AWS and Microsoft with strategic market status (SMS) following an inquiry into the UK cloud market. The CMA proposed the designation to introduce targeted measures aimed at fostering competition, but the options are still under review.
