VaMEx: A robot Swarm for Martian Exploration - 100 Word Summary
The German research project vamex is pioneering the first practical use of autonomous robot swarms to search for water and life on Mars. tested successfully in a quarry, the swarm – comprising rovers, a spider-like robot, and drones – navigated challenging terrain and deployed navigation beacons.
A key component is a digital twin of mars, allowing robots to practise interaction. Led by the University of Bremen, VaMEx aims to create a collaborative system ready for commercial development, with potential Earth-based applications in agriculture and disaster control.
