Authors Reply: Global Medical Response to Gaza Health Crisis

We acknowledge and appreciate the thoughtful and passionate responses from Kavita Algu, Hiba Zafran, and their colleagues regarding our recent Correspondence on the health crisis in Gaza, which we termed a “healthocide.”1 Their letters underscore the profound concern within the global medical community about the extensive damage to Gaza’s healthcare system and the ethical obligations inherent in our profession.2,3

The destruction of healthcare infrastructure in Gaza has created a catastrophic situation for civilians. Reports from organizations like the World Health Institution (WHO) detail widespread damage to hospitals and clinics, rendering many non-functional.4 This damage, coupled with shortages of essential medical supplies, personnel, and power, severely limits access to even basic healthcare services.

The letters from Algu, Zafran, and colleagues rightly emphasize the moral responsibilities of healthcare professionals in the face of such devastation. These responsibilities extend beyond providing direct medical care to advocating for the protection of healthcare facilities and personnel, and for ensuring humanitarian access to those in need.5 The intentional targeting of healthcare infrastructure, if confirmed, would constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law.6

The ongoing crisis demands a concerted global response. This includes increased humanitarian aid, diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire, and accountability for actions that violate international law. The medical community must continue to raise awareness of the situation in Gaza and advocate for the protection of both patients and healthcare workers.7

We remain committed to documenting and highlighting the health consequences of the conflict in Gaza, and we value the contributions of our colleagues who share our concern for the well-being of the affected population.
