Jess Hull Advances to 800m Semifinals After World Championships Heat Fall
Budapest, Hungary – Australian runner Jess Hull will compete in the semifinals of the women’s 800m at the World Athletics Championships after successfully appealing a decision following a fall during her heat on Tuesday. Hull finished her heat in 2:13.42, the slowest of the 55 finishers across seven heats, but was granted progression by the referee. She will be joined in the semifinals by fellow Australians Claudia Hollingsworth and Abbey Caldwell.
Hull was impeded during the race, suffering a small gash on her right leg from her spikes. Despite the incident, she continued to finish the race, while another competitor, Sekgodiso, was forced to withdraw due to a hamstring injury after dropping off the pace in the second lap.
“It’s racing, but there’s nothing different I could’ve done,” Hull said after the race. “I was taken out from behind so I think personally I haven’t done anything wrong. It’s not the fault of the pack either, that is racing, but I didn’t get a chance to even run myself through.”
The women’s 800m semifinals are scheduled for tonight, with Hollingsworth running at 9:43pm AEST, Hull at 9:52pm, and Caldwell at 10:01pm.
