shark Attack Claims Life of Tourist in Australia, Another Critically Injured
Kylies Beach, NSW, Australia – A shark attack at Kylies Beach near Port Macquarie, new South wales, on Thursday left one woman dead and a man in critical condition. The tourists, both in their mid-20s, were swimming near the popular surf spot, approximately 218 miles north of Sydney, when the incident occured.
According to NSW police Inspector Timothy Bayly, “A woman aged in her mid-20s…has passed away at the scene. A male, also in his mid-20s, suffered serious injuries.”
Bystanders on the beach immediately provided first aid, applying a makeshift tourniquet to the man’s injuries before he was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. NSW Ambulance member Joshua Smyth highlighted the quick response, stating, “It’s realy significant to note that there were really good bystanders administering aid to the male patient.”
The beach has been closed following the attack, and authorities have deployed five SMART drumlines to monitor shark activity in the area.
This incident comes just over two months after surfer Mercury Psillakas was fatally attacked by a suspected great white shark near Dee Why in sydney’s Northern beaches. Following that tragedy, Psillakas’ wife, Maria, shared her grief: “Losing Merc has left a place in my heart that I can’t really put into words,” she said. “He is…was…my rock,my everything. I have a little girl that keeps on asking, ‘why?’ And I don’t know what to tell her.”
