Kangaroos Hit by Late Withdrawals as Coates and Lomax Ruled Out of ashes Tour
LONDON – The Australian Kangaroos have suffered a double blow ahead of their rugby league Ashes series against England, with winger Xavier Coates and center Zac Lomax ruled out of the squad. The news comes just days after the team was announced, throwing coach Mal Meninga’s plans into disarray.
Coates sustained an ankle injury during training, while Lomax has withdrawn due to personal reasons. The pair’s absence creates selection headaches for Meninga, with the series opener scheduled later this month.
The squad already included Brisbane Broncos hero Reece Walsh, who earned selection following his breathtaking performance in the NRL grand final and is set to make his Test debut. Other notable selections include Mark Nawaqanitawase of the Sydney Roosters, Brisbane pair Kotoni Staggs and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, and Penrith fullback Dylan Edwards, who has previously played on the wing for Australia in 2023.
Lomax’s withdrawal comes amid reports linking him to a move to the breakaway rugby competition R360, despite being under contract with the Parramatta Eels until the end of 2028.His management has maintained he will honour his current deal. Parramatta coach Jason Ryles indicated he would consider releasing Lomax if a request was made.
Prior to the injury news, coach Walters expressed confidence in Lomax’s mindset. “Having spoken to Zac himself,he certainly has a good mindset around the tour,” Walters said at Monday’s squad declaration. “I have had several conversations with him; he is right to go.”
Replacements for Coates and Lomax are expected to be announced shortly.
