Three Killed in Shooting at Austin Target; Suspect Apprehended After Pursuit

Austin, Texas – A shooting in the parking lot of a Target store located at 8601 Research Boulevard in North Austin, texas, has resulted in the deaths of three individuals. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. Central Time on Monday, April 15, 2024, prompting a swift response from the Austin police Department (APD) and Austin-Travis County EMS.

Details of the Shooting and Suspect Apprehension

According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, officers arrived on the scene within four minutes of receiving the initial call. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim was transported to a local hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries. A fourth individual was treated at the scene for injuries not related to the shooting.

The suspect, identified as a 32-year-old white male, initially fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. Following a pursuit, the suspect crashed the vehicle and then carjacked a second vehicle before being apprehended by police in South Austin. Authorities utilized a Taser during the arrest. The suspect’s identity has not yet been officially released pending notification of family.

Suspect’s History and Mental Health Concerns

Chief Davis confirmed that the suspect has a prior history with the APD and has previously been placed on emergency detention holds. Travis County officials can initiate these holds at psychiatric facilities when there is evidence of an “imminent, substantial risk of serious harm to self or others,” as outlined on the Travis County website. This suggests a potential mental health crisis contributing to the incident.

Examination Ongoing; Motive Unknown

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. As of Monday afternoon, authorities have not released the identities of the victims. APD is urging anyone with details related to the shooting to contact the department.

Official Reactions

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed his condolences and outrage, stating on social media, “This is a devastating situation… a sickening, fearful act of gun violence.”
