New Austin Shelter Offers Extensive Support for Domestic Violence Survivors & Children
A new shelter in Austin, created through the conversion of a former Super 8 Motel, is now open to provide safe haven and wraparound services for women and children experiencing domestic violence. The approximately $16 million project, funded through the city of austin’s general fund and 2018 bond dollars, began construction in August 2024 and was completed by the City of Austin’s Capital Delivery Services.
The renovated facility features 40 resident rooms, transformed from the motel’s original 62 guest rooms. Recognizing the importance of healing environments, the former pool area has been replaced with a dedicated outdoor children’s play area designed to foster physical activity and connection with nature.
“This shelter is a reflection of our values as a community,” stated Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. “It’s about protecting health, restoring dignity and making sure no one has to choose between safety and survival. Together, we’re building a healthier Austin where every family has the chance to heal and thrive.”
Austin Public Health Director Adrienne Sturrup emphasized the city’s commitment, saying, ”This shelter represents our investment in the mission to protect and support survivors of domestic violence. By providing this safe haven and partnering with The SAFE Alliance to operate these essential services, we are empowering survivors to rebuild their lives and achieve stability.”
The SAFE Alliance will manage the shelter and deliver a comprehensive suite of on-site support services, including assistance with basic needs and connections to financial aid and permanent housing options. Key services offered include:
24/7 emergency transportation and immediate shelter placement.
Individual and group counseling.
Personalized safety planning and case management with a focus on securing stable housing.
Assistance navigating healthcare benefits.
Advocacy within the educational system for K-12 students.
A specialized Children’s Services program designed to build resilience and essential skills.
Legal support and advocacy.
Peer support networks, life skills training, and access to career and educational opportunities.”Today is about strengthening the safety net for survivors and their children,” explained Julia Spann, CEO of The SAFE alliance. “Housing is violence prevention. When violence forces you to flee, you need more than a bed-you need a pathway to stability: safety planning, counseling, medical and legal care, and a bridge to permanent housing. We’re closing a critical gap so families can move from danger to a future where thay can heal and thrive.”
Shelter services are accessible to all without discrimination. The SAFE Alliance prioritizes individuals at the highest risk through its 24/7 SAFEline hotline.
