Austin Early Voting: Texas Primary Guide & Dates (Feb 17-27)

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Early voting began in Austin, Texas today, February 17, for the March 3rd primary elections, continuing through February 27th. The League of Women Voters has published a guide to assist residents in understanding how to exercise their right to vote.

Volunteers from the League of Women Voters were observed canvassing an east Austin neighborhood on Friday, February 3rd, as reported by Telemundo Austin, to encourage participation in the upcoming primaries. The organization, described as a national, nonpartisan group largely comprised of volunteers, has been focusing on registering Hispanic voters in recent weeks.

The March elections will determine the nominees for numerous federal, state, and local positions, including mayor, city council members, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, senator, representatives, judges, and various referendums. According to Maria Medina, a spokesperson for the League of Women Voters, Hispanic voter participation remains low at both the local and state levels, a trend the organization aims to address.

“Many times what we discover is that people do not have complete information about what is required to register,” Medina stated. “Many people have told us that they do not realize for which candidates they can vote or where to find that information, and that is why we are here.”

The League of Women Voters Austin Area, a local chapter of the national League of Women Voters, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, grassroots civic organization dedicated to empowering voters and defending democracy, according to its website. The Austin Area League, along with the League of Women Voters of Texas, issued a statement regarding new congressional maps passed by the Texas legislature, though the content of that statement was not immediately available.

Beyond encouraging voter turnout, the League of Women Voters is also working to motivate eligible permanent residents to pursue naturalization, enabling them to participate in the electoral process. The deadline to register to vote in the March primaries was February 5th.
