AU and Africa CDC Call for Urgent Action to Contain Spreading Ebola Outbreak

AU and Africa CDC Call for Urgent Action to Contain Spreading Ebola Outbreak

October 23, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

African Union and Africa CDC Urge Coordinated Action Against Spreading Ebola Outbreak

“This is a moment for African solidarity, decisive leadership, and collective responsibility,” Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said in a statement regarding the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

The African Union and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention called for enhanced solidarity and coordinated continental action to contain the spreading Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak across Africa. The appeal followed discussions between AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya concerning continental response and preparedness measures.

  • The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has expanded across Central, East, and West Africa, with confirmed cases now documented in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria.
  • The World Health Organization reports that six out of every 10 Ebola deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have occurred outside treatment centres, showing severe gaps in timely diagnosis and contact tracing.
  • The Africa CDC has scheduled an emergency ministerial meeting for Wednesday, convening ministers of health, finance, and transport to strengthen collective containment measures and resource mobilization.

Regional Spread Across Three African Regions

The outbreak has now reached multiple countries across three African regions, prompting warnings from global health authorities that the virus is becoming harder to track and contain. The World Health Organization stated that the outbreak was announced in the Democratic Republic of Congo in mid-May and has since killed more than 4,000 people there. The DRC health authorities have noted that the fatality rate in the country is approaching 50 percent, making it the deadliest Ebola event in the nation’s history.

Neighboring Uganda recorded 20 confirmed cases, including 15 imported from the DRC, along with two deaths, before health officials declared the country Ebola-free in August. However, new infections have surfaced elsewhere. Kenya’s Ministry of Health confirmed its first case earlier in October and subsequently reported eight additional infections. Patrick Amoth, the director-general of the Kenyan Ministry of Health, stated that officials had successfully traced all 135 contacts associated with the country’s index case.

Nigeria became the fourth African country affected by the outbreak after confirming its first case of the Bundibugyo strain. The patient is the Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja who travelled through eastern DRC and transited via Uganda prior to symptom onset. World Health Organization representatives, including regional director for WHO in Africa Mohamed Janabi and emergency response manager Patrick Otim, noted that investigators are actively reviewing her travel history and tracing 44 secondary contacts in Abuja.

Patients Seeking Care Outside Facilities Increase Transmission Risks

Containment efforts continue to face significant obstacles, particularly regarding patients seeking medical care outside established facilities. Dr Mohammed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, warned that six out of every 10 Ebola deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have occurred outside treatment centres. This dynamic increases community transmission risks as undiagnosed individuals continue interacting with family members before receiving formal intervention.

The virus has also placed frontline personnel under severe operational strain. More than 300 health workers in the affected region have contracted Ebola during the course of the outbreak. Health agencies emphasize that protecting medical staff through adequate protective equipment, strict infection prevention protocols, and continuous community engagement remains vital to breaking transmission chains and building public trust.

Upcoming Emergency Ministerial Meeting

To address the expanding crisis, the Africa CDC has organized an emergency online crisis meeting for next Wednesday. The session will bring together African ministers of health, finance, and transport to align cross-sectoral strategies, accelerate resource mobilization, and reinforce public health preparedness across the continent. The Africa CDC originally declared the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of continental security on May 18, one day after the World Health Organization issued a similar international designation.
