Atlanta Airport PreCheck Line: Massive Wraparound Chaos

March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Security lines at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) stretched beyond the TSA PreCheck area Monday morning, wrapping inside the terminal, according to traveler reports. The congestion comes as the partial government shutdown entered its 35th day, impacting Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staffing levels.

The shutdown, stemming from a lapse in Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding, has led to TSA employees working without pay, and an increasing number are either quitting or calling out sick, according to reports. This staffing shortage is directly contributing to the extended wait times at major airports nationwide, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Dulles, Reagan National, and Baltimore/Washington.

Travelers are being advised to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled departure, and potentially longer at major hubs, to account for the delays. The MyTSA mobile app provides real-time information on estimated security wait times at specific airports. Flight tracking tools like FlightAware and FlightStats are too available to check for flight delays and cancellations.

Although TSA PreCheck is intended to expedite the screening process, even those enrolled in the program are experiencing longer than usual waits, as some airports have been forced to close PreCheck lanes due to the staffing shortages. According to Atlanta airport officials, peak hours for the domestic terminal checkpoints typically notice wait times between 45 and 60 minutes, while off-peak hours average 20-30 minutes. TSA PreCheck lanes, even during busy times, generally remain under 10 minutes, though this is not guaranteed.

For international flights departing from the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal (Concourse F), standard security screening typically takes 20-45 minutes, but can reach up to 60 minutes during peak evening travel waves. Passengers utilizing the CLEAR lane at the international terminal generally experience waits under 5 minutes. Airport officials recommend allowing extra time for international travel due to the inclusion of passport checks during the screening process.

As of Monday, the TSA does not publish a single nationwide wait-time dashboard, but individual airports are providing real-time updates on their websites. For domestic flights from ATL, the airport recommends arriving at least two hours before departure, and three hours for international flights. During peak hours, an additional 30 minutes is advised. Travelers with TSA PreCheck can apply the airport’s departure time calculator for a personalized recommendation based on current conditions.
