Atirath Roy Earns Two Degrees and Top Honors at UNL to Pursue PGA Golf Career
Atirath Roy, a New Delhi native who knew by age 10 he wanted to build a career in golf, has graduated from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with dual degrees in PGA golf management and economics, alongside the institution’s highest undergraduate academic honor as a Chancellor’s Scholar, as reported by the university.
Balancing Elite Academics and Professional Golf Aspirations
Graduating Saturday, Roy earned the university’s Chancellor’s Scholar distinction, an elite designation reserved exclusively for students who achieve an A in every single undergraduate class throughout their studies. According to university records, Roy pursued two distinct disciplines: the highly niche PGA golf management program—offered at only 16 universities nationwide—and economics, a second major he added to better understand the underlying financial structures of the sports industry.
The transition to collegiate life followed a high school graduation upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. “The traditional pathway I imagined for myself changed considerably during the COVID era,” Roy noted in university reporting. Rather than abandoning his athletic ambitions, he leveraged the specialized Nebraska program to merge competitive play with corporate management strategy.
From New Delhi to Bedford Hills: Securing the Lead Assistant Professional Role
Roy has already transitioned from academia to the workforce, accepting a position as the lead assistant golf professional at the GlenArbor Golf Club, a private club located in Bedford Hills, New York. His path to the GlenArbor position was forged during a summer internship in New York. On his scheduled days off, Roy actively toured regional golf courses, connected with industry veterans, and studied diverse operational models.
“That networking ultimately helped lead me to GlenArbor and reinforced one of the biggest lessons I learned during college: opportunities often come from being willing to put yourself out there, meet people and learn from them,” Roy stated. His day-to-day responsibilities at the private facility span full-scale golf operations, instruction, junior clinics, ladies’ clinics, and customized sessions for advanced amateur players.
Synthesizing Economics and Sports Management for Future Markets
Choosing to study economics alongside a vocational golf management curriculum provided Roy with a macro-level view of organizational behavior and market decision-making. “PGA golf management was always my primary focus, but studying economics gave me a broader understanding of business, decision-making and how organizations operate,” Roy explained, reflecting on his dual-degree trajectory. He credited his work ethic to his parents, Debroto and Toolika Bansal Roy, whose dedication shaped his approach to higher education.
