Nigel Farage Aide George Cottrell Linked to $8.8M Polymarket Trump Bets
A secret Polymarket account operated under the username GCottrell93 funneled roughly $8.8 million into winning bets on Donald Trump during the 2024 United States presidential election. According to findings published by on-chain investigator ZachXBT and corroborated by the Financial Times, the account is linked to George Cottrell, a political aide and major donor to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.
Tracing the On-Chain Capital Flows and Crypto Exchanges
The financial architecture of decentralized prediction markets leaves a permanent ledger trail. According to ZachXBT’s on-chain analysis, the GCottrell93 account received its multi-million dollar deposits in late October 2024 from two unidentified wallets. These funds were routed through crypto exchanges including OKX and ChangeNOW, a swap service that does not require identity verification for most transactions.
The Financial Times reported that the account received $7 million across five different transactions from an OKX wallet, alongside another $1.83 million originating from ChangeNOW. Polymarket operates on the Polygon network and utilizes pUSD, a USDC-backed token, to collateralize trades. This infrastructure allowed investigators to map the transaction history transparently. Following the election results, the account reportedly generated approximately $4.4 million in profits, with $13 million in winnings subsequently sent back to an OKX wallet and $282,000 routed to ChangeNOW, as detailed by the Financial Times.
Broader Trading Activity and Political Finance Implications
Cottrell’s account activity extended far beyond the US presidential contest. According to reports by Protos, the account lost approximately $655,000 on Iran-related geopolitical positions, with a single bet accounting for roughly $550,000 of those losses. Additional ongoing positions included a $41,000 bet regarding the duration of the US conflict with Iran, and a $71,000 wager on whether Vice President JD Vance will secure the Republican presidential nomination in 2028.

The revelation ties high-stakes cryptocurrency speculation directly to British political networks. Cottrell, 32, is a prominent donor and former aide to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. His financial backing of Farage—which reportedly included funding staff, security, and housing prior to the 2024 election—has drawn scrutiny from political watchdogs.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Future Market Compliance
Polymarket remains officially blocked to US-based users following a 2022 settlement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), yet it continues to operate for international participants. The use of no-KYC swap services to fund multi-million dollar positions has intensified criticism from regulatory advocates regarding the adequacy of identity verification protocols on decentralized prediction platforms.

Meanwhile, investigations into the undisclosed funding sources behind the initial wallet deposits continue to draw attention from parliamentary watchdogs monitoring political finance transparency.
