At Least 20 Dead After Powerful Earthquake Hits Flores, Indonesia

August 16, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores island in eastern Indonesia on August 15, 2026, killing at least 20 people and forcing thousands to evacuate. The tremor, centered 68 kilometers northwest of Ende, triggered immediate tsunami warnings and caused widespread structural damage across the Nagekeo and Manggarai regencies.

The disaster reveals a recurring vulnerability in Indonesia’s eastern archipelago. In Maumere, hospital walls cracked and patients fled their wards as the earth shook, highlighting the fragility of regional healthcare facilities during seismic events.

Rescue Operations and Casualties in Nagekeo and Manggarai

Fathur Rahman, an official with Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS), confirmed that at least 20 people died across four different towns. Speaking from a boat en route to the Nagekeo regency, Rahman stated that six people were injured and two remained buried under rubble at the time of his report.

Rescue efforts are currently concentrated on the Nagekeo regency, identified as the hardest-hit area. However, Rahman noted that landslides have cut off several roads, complicating the delivery of aid and the extraction of victims. In the neighboring Manggarai regency, rescuers are working to reach two individuals reported to be trapped alive beneath collapsed structures.

The human toll is compounded by the panic of the initial jolt. Yohanes Babo, a 56-year-old resident of Nagekeo, described a scene of chaos at a local market where people ran blindly in search of higher ground. Babo reported that his family remained safe, but the psychological impact of the “strong shaking” led to mass evacuations toward the hills.

Tsunami Warnings and Seismic Activity

The Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) initially issued a tsunami warning, urging residents to move inland. AFP journalists witnessed the sea retreating in Nagekeo—a classic precursor to a tsunami—which prompted residents to flee by foot, motorbike, and pickup trucks.

Wijayanto, the BMKG earthquake and tsunami director, confirmed that the warning was eventually lifted, though the agency continues to monitor sea levels. Despite the lift, officials have warned residents against returning to damaged buildings. The risk remains high due to persistent aftershocks, the strongest of which was measured at magnitude 6.1.

The shallow nature of the quake—located just off the north coast—increased the intensity of the shaking felt on land. Because the affected area consists primarily of villages and small towns with few high-rise buildings, the damage is characterized by the total collapse of smaller masonry structures rather than the failure of skyscrapers.

Historical Context of the Pacific Ring of Fire

Indonesia’s geography places it directly within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone of intense seismic activity. This event follows a pattern of devastating tremors in the region. The 1992 Flores earthquake, also a magnitude 7.7, resulted in approximately 2,500 deaths due to a triggered tsunami.

The scale of risk in Indonesia is underscored by a history of massive displacement and loss:

  • 2004: A 9.1-magnitude tremor off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 people across the region, including 170,000 in Indonesia.
  • 2018 (Lombok): A series of quakes killed more than 550 people on Lombok and Sumbawa.
  • 2018 (Palu): A 7.5-magnitude quake and tsunami on Sulawesi left over 4,300 people dead or missing.

Infrastructure Failure and Regional Impact

In Maumere, located 2,500 kilometers east of Jakarta, the earthquake caused immediate structural failures. Lukas Lotar, a hospital customer service official, reported that the jolt was powerful enough to crack hospital walls and cause patients to evacuate the building in panic.

The current crisis in Flores is a reminder that in the Ring of Fire, the end of a tsunami warning is not the end of the danger.
