At-Home HPV Tests Offered to Boost Cervical Screening Uptake
Millions of women in England will soon gain access to self-administered HPV tests. This initiative, designed to simplify screening, targets the significant number of women who have not kept up to date with their cervical cancer screenings.
New Initiative Launched
Starting in January, women will be able to receive these at-home test kits. According to NHS England, the kits will be offered to those who have delayed their cervical screenings. The process involves using a long cotton-wool bud to gather a sample from the vagina.

The current screening rate is just 68.8%, well below the NHS England goal of 80%. Recent figures show that in 2023, cervical cancer screenings prevented an estimated 2,000 deaths in the UK (Cancer Research UK).
Reasons for Low Screening Rates
The Department of Health and Social Care in England has stated that the program addresses obstacles, such as embarrassment, lack of time, and cultural or religious concerns. Younger women, those with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and LGBT+ communities often miss appointments.
The aim of this program is to make screening more accessible, and potentially save lives. If HPV is detected, women will be invited to consult with a doctor for further tests to check for any cell changes that could indicate cancer.
