Assassin’s Creed Shadows Set to Introduce Nightmare Difficulty and New Story Content
ubisoft’s latest past action-adventure, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, is slated to receive a meaningful update that will include a challenging new Nightmare difficulty mode and additional story content. This upcoming addition aims to provide players with a fresh and more demanding experience within the Sengoku period of Japan.
Released in March, assassin’s Creed Shadows has already achieved considerable commercial success, ranking as the third best-selling game of 2025 to date. However, the title has also been a focal point of public discussion and controversy.Key points of contention have included the portrayal of Yasuke, a historical black samurai, as a playable protagonist, and the inclusion of Ibuki, a non-binary ronin with whom Yasuke can develop a relationship.
In response to these discussions, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has previously offered a general defense of the game’s creative direction. He emphasized the studio’s intention to allow players to “live the journey of a hero,” highlighting yasuke as a “real character” and a “person who really existed.” Guillemot stated that showcasing this historical figure was a deliberate choice to tell a “different story.”
Beyond the game’s content, the article also touches upon broader industry concerns. A player shareholder reportedly questioned CEO Guillemot regarding the “Stop Killing Games” movement. This initiative emerged in response to Ubisoft’s decision to delist certain older titles, such as The Crew, from digital storefronts. The movement has gained significant traction, with a petition in the European Union surpassing one million signatures. Guillemot acknowledged the ongoing discussion, stating, “Obviously the support for all games cannot last forever, but it’s a question we are working on.”
