Assam Board Maths Exam: Moderate Difficulty, Lengthy MCQs Reported

February 19, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Guwahati, Assam – The recent Class 9 and 10 Mathematics examinations administered by the SEBA (Assam Secondary Education Board) presented challenges for students, particularly in the Basic Mathematics paper, according to educators. The examinations concluded on February 19, 2026.

Tanmoy Das, PGT Mathematics at Modern English School in Kahilipara, Guwahati, characterized the Basic Mathematics examination as being of moderate difficulty overall. However, Das highlighted a significant obstacle for students: the length and complexity of the Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs). “While the paper followed a familiar structure, the Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) stood out for being notably lengthy,” Das explained. “These initial questions required students to invest significant time in analysis and calculation, demanding more than just a surface-level understanding to navigate the options effectively.”

Modern English School (MES), a CBSE-affiliated, co-educational institution serving students aged 6-18, has a noted tradition of academic excellence. The school’s faculty, including Das, have been recognized for their expertise; an article authored by Das on mathematical concepts was recently featured on Times Now, demonstrating the school’s commitment to high standards in education.

In contrast to the demanding MCQs, Das praised the case study questions for their accessibility. “The case study questions were lauded for their directness and clarity,” he said. “Since many of these problems reflected scenarios that students had repeatedly practiced, they were considered common and highly approachable.” This suggests a potential shift in assessment strategy, emphasizing analytical skills over rote memorization, as evidenced by the focus on complex MCQs.

The CBSE Class 10 Basic Mathematics examination has also been the subject of analysis, with educators evaluating the paper’s structure and difficulty. The focus on analytical skills within the MCQs suggests a broader trend towards testing deeper comprehension of mathematical concepts.
