The ongoing strike by university lecturers in Zimbabwe has created notable disruption for thousands of students, leaving many struggling with their studies. Tinotenda Kahenga, a first-year pharmaceutical chemistry student, described the situation as “vrey tough and stressful,” highlighting the challenges of studying independently or with peers during the prolonged industrial action.

despite the academic turmoil, the chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Students Union at the University of Zimbabwe,Kohlo, expressed understanding for the lecturers’ position. He stated that lecturers “have a right to fight for fair salaries, not the slave wages they are currently getting.” Kohlo emphasized that the obligation for providing education lies with the university governance, especially given the “exorbitant amounts of fees that they charge.”

The student body has reportedly communicated their concerns about the strike’s impact to the university administration on multiple occasions and has organized “peaceful protests.” However,Kohlo reported that he and six other students were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, although they were afterward released on the same day.
