Jonesboro, Ark. – Arkansas State University freshman Meghna Arun Kumar has been recognized as the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday, following a pair of victories against BYU and Memphis.
Kumar’s week began with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Karina Mohamed of BYU on February 6th, playing in the No. 6 singles position. The victory was particularly notable as it reversed a previous result from the fall season, according to Arkansas State University reporting.
She continued her strong performance on Sunday, securing a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win against Clemence Thouard of Memphis at the No. 5 position. This victory contributed to a 4-2 team win over Memphis, marking A-State’s first victory against the Tigers since 2009. Memphis had previously won two of the last three American Athletic Conference Championships.
Through the season, Kumar has compiled an 8-5 overall singles record, with a 3-1 record in dual matches. BYU defeated Arkansas State 6-1 on February 6th, with Kumar’s win representing the Red Wolves’ sole point in that match. BYU then went on to defeat Memphis 6-1 on Friday, February 7th.
The Arkansas State women’s tennis team will return to action with a home opener against Tennessee State on Friday at 10:00 a.m. At the Jonesboro Country Club.
