Arthur’s Seat Wildfire Forces Mass Evacuation as Blazes Rage Near Edinburgh’s Iconic Landmark
Emergency services responded to a significant wildfire on Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh on Sunday, prompting the evacuation of the popular landmark as flames spread across the hillside. The blaze, which occurred in Holyrood Park, sent a plume of smoke over the city as firefighters worked to bring the situation under control.
Neil MacLennan, a group commander with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, stated that while the exact origin of the fire remains under investigation, the nature of the incident points toward human involvement. Addressing the circumstances of the blaze, MacLennan told BBC Radio’s Quality Morning Scotland that while specific details are still being determined, there is a high degree of certainty that the fire resulted from human behavior or intervention. He further noted that natural wildfires are rare in the region and that the high volume of visitors to the area contributes to the ongoing risk of such fires.
The fire moved rapidly through gorse and heather on the steep terrain, creating what officials described as a challenging environment for suppression efforts. The area was evacuated to ensure public safety, and authorities confirmed there were no reported casualties as a result of the incident.
Historic Scotland has announced that the high road in the vicinity of the park will remain closed to the public until at least Friday. Officials have advised the public to avoid the area while the investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
