Arsenal Winger Christos Tzolis Suffers Injury in Greece Draw Against Netherlands

Arsenal Winger Christos Tzolis Suffers Injury in Greece Draw Against Netherlands

October 2, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Arsenal winger Christos Tzolis was substituted with an apparent hamstring injury in the 18th minute of Greece’s 2-2 UEFA Nations League draw against the Netherlands in Thessaloniki on Thursday, joining a growing list of fitness concerns for manager Mikel Arteta.

The 18th-Minute Exit in Thessaloniki

Christos Tzolis went to ground during an attacking sprint in the opening minutes of Greece’s Group A2 match against the Netherlands, pulling his shirt over his head as he walked off the pitch. Tzolis, who joined Arsenal in a £34 million summer transfer from Club Brugge following a 23-goal campaign in Belgium, has started all five Premier League matches for the Gunners this season.

How Greece and the Netherlands Shared Four Goals

Before the substitution disrupted the match, Greece built a 2-0 lead over the visitors. Fotis Ioannidis opened the scoring with a tidy finish and then set up Georgios Masouras for the second. The Netherlands responded after manager Xavi Hernandez made a triple substitution at half-time. Denzel Dumfries had a goal ruled out for offside when the Dutch pushed for an equalizer, before substitute Tijjani Reijnders lashed in a goal in the 89th minute to salvage a 2-2 draw. Ioannidis noted after the match that the Dutch changed tactics in the second half and the team did not respond adequately, while defender Kostas Tsimikas emphasized that the squad remained unbeaten and top of the group.

Arsenal Squad Depleted During the International Window

The early withdrawal compounds a punishing international window for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. In addition, Declan Rice withdrew from the England squad to manage fitness and workload concerns. Arsenal could return to domestic action with three important players requiring assessment before their next fixture against Leeds United.

Unresolved Squad Availability Before Sunday’s Rematch

Greece remains the surprise leader of Group A2 after previously defeating Serbia and pulling off a 1-0 upset of Germany in Augsburg. The squad faces Jurgen Klopp’s Germany side again on Sunday in a rematch to close the September/October international window. Tzolis’ availability for that fixture remains unknown following his early withdrawal on Thursday. It is still not clear whether his departure was strictly precautionary or the start of a lengthy absence, leaving Arsenal waiting for official results from medical scans in London.
