Arizona Flooding Creates Hazmat Emergency, Four Confirmed Deaths
Globe, AZ – Historic flooding in Globe, Arizona has prompted a state of emergency and a warning to stay away from the downtown area after approximately 1,000 propane tanks were dislodged from a distribution facility and scattered by fast-moving floodwaters. At least three deaths have been confirmed in Globe, with a fourth victim discovered Saturday morning in scottsdale, bringing the total fatalities to four.
The flooding, which began Friday, has rendered downtown Globe “unsafe” due to compromised buildings, hazardous chemicals, and debris, according to a Facebook post from the city of Globe. Residents are urged to stay out of the area until further notice.
“Historic Downtown Globe is currently unsafe, with compromised buildings as well as hazardous chemicals and debris, including propane tanks,” the city stated. “For your safety, please stay out of the area until further notice.”
Search and rescue operations are underway, complicated by the presence of the propane tanks and the need to allow trained search dogs to work effectively. Authorities are also asking residents to shelter in place and avoid the flood zone to prevent interference with rescue efforts.
“We do not need additional people in the flood zone. Extra traffic puts lives at risk and makes it harder for first responders to do their jobs,” the city’s Facebook post continued. “The best way to help at this time is to have patience and allow trained professionals the space to do what is needed.”
Search-and-rescue (SAR) teams and hazmat crews from across the region are responding to assess and clean up the damage. “All available agencies in the region are responding to assist with SAR and hazmat assessment and clean up,” a county emergency management official told ABC News.
The fourth fatality was discovered in Scottsdale, approximately 90 miles from Globe. The victim was found pinned beneath a walkway bridge near a vehicle caught in nine feet of floodwaters, CNN reports.
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency Saturday, stating, “The flooding in Gila County has caused heartbreaking loss and serious damage. I’ve declared a State of Emergency to ensure resources are available instantly and that every impacted community gets the support they need to recover and rebuild.”
Gila County Public Health and Community Services thanked governor Hobbs on Facebook, noting that the Emergency Operations Center has been activated and shelters have been opened for displaced residents.
