Argentina’s First Fresh Cherries Harvested Early in Jujuy Province

Argentina Begins Extra-Early‌ Cherry Harvest, ⁤Pioneering New Market Window

JUJUY, ARGENTINA – October 7, 2025 – Growers in‍ Argentina’s Jujuy province have commenced harvesting extra-early cherries in⁤ week 40, marking a significant advancement for the nation’s stone fruit industry and opening potential new export opportunities. The harvest,⁣ enabled by the adaptability of Zaiger cultivars and ongoing genetic programs ⁤like Bloom Fresh, allows for delivery of quality cherries ⁤at the‌ end of‌ September‍ – a period previously unavailable to Argentinian producers.

This breakthrough positions Jujuy as a key early production area for stone fruit, building on its 40-year history with early peaches, nectarines, and plums. The ability to supply high-quality fruit during‍ a unique harvest window offers a strategic advantage ⁤in both the domestic Argentinian market and for international exports, ⁣potentially reshaping competitive‍ dynamics. ⁤ Güizzo Frutas Frescas S.A. is among the ⁤producers leading this initiative, confirming the viability⁣ of these cultivars in the region.

“Being able to deliver ⁣quality cherries at the end of September is a strategic advantage,” stated Nicolás Güizzo, director ⁢and technical manager of Güizzo Frutas frescas S.A. “It creates enormous commercial ⁢opportunities, both in the domestic Argentinian market and for future exports. It’s⁤ also true‌ that being ⁤a marginal‌ area for cherry production entails the need for certain challenges to be tackled in each cycle.”

The success of the trial also paves the way for‍ introducing other new extra-early⁣ varieties with low winter cold requirements, further expanding production possibilities. Dr. Viviana Curzel highlighted Jujuy’s temperate‌ valley’s capacity to offer unique harvest periods, stating the region’s potential to supply both Argentinian consumers and international markets.
