Apple Reverses Course to Unveil Touch OLED MacBook Pro Models on October 28

  • The Tech TL;DR: Apple will announce 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring touch-enabled OLED displays on October 28, 2026.
  • Starting prices are reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman to rise by up to $500 over current mini-LED configurations due to the costlier display hardware.
  • The new laptops will replace the screen notch with a Dynamic Island and run on Apple’s existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

Apple plans to unveil 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with touch-enabled OLED displays on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported. Invitees to an event in Los Angeles will receive hands-on time with the laptops after they debut in a press release. The launch reverses a decades-long company stance against touch interfaces on laptop screens, 9to5Mac reported.

Pricing and Hardware Speculation for the New Lineup

Existing mini-LED models start at $2,499 for the 14-inch configuration and $2,999 for the 16-inch version, meaning the new OLED iterations could push baseline costs significantly higher.

Hardware modifications extend beyond the display panel. The updated laptops will feature a lighter chassis design and replace the traditional screen cutout with a Dynamic Island, according to siliconreport.com. Under the hood, the machines will run on Apple’s existing M5 Pro and M5 Max silicon. Software-wise, macOS Golden Gate reportedly introduces a dynamic interface that adjusts on-screen controls depending on whether a user interacts via the touchscreen or the trackpad, adapting the Dock, Menu Bar, and touch-tailored menus accordingly.

Evaluating the Touchscreen Shift After Decades of Resistance

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs famously savaged rival PC pivots toward touchscreens, stating that “after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off,” as TechRadar documented.

It is unclear whether enterprise development environments and heavy desktop applications will fully optimize for touch input alongside traditional keyboard and trackpad use.
