Apple iPhone Duo Features Replaceable Screen Layer to Fix Foldable Crease Concerns

Apple iPhone Duo Features Replaceable Screen Layer to Fix Foldable Crease Concerns

October 2, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple has confirmed a repair strategy for its upcoming iPhone Duo, revealing that the foldable device features a replaceable nano-texture cover layer designed to mitigate crease visibility and surface wear. AppleCare+ subscribers can have this layer professionally replaced for USD$19 (AUD$29), a measure intended to maintain the display’s condition over the device’s lifespan. While the cost for this service without coverage remains unknown, the repair fee is notably separate from the cost of replacing the entire inner display.

Engineering for Durability

The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch flexible panel shielded by a specialized nano-texture film. According to Kate Bergeron, Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering, the company dedicated significant resources to the layer’s development to ensure it withstands daily folding stress. The finish serves a dual purpose: it enhances legibility by reducing glare and minimizes the visual impact of the center crease.

This approach distinguishes the iPhone Duo from other market alternatives, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel Fold, which utilize permanent screen protectors. It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one, Bergeron said.

Professional Replacement Only

While the cover layer is designed to be swapped for a fresh one, Apple emphasizes that the replacement process is not a do-it-yourself project. Customers are advised to visit a physical Apple Store to have the film professionally applied. Despite some suggestions that removing the film could offer a glossy display with better contrast, experts caution that self-removal is a significant risk that could permanently destroy the screen.

The iPhone Duo, which starts at AUD$3,499 for the 256GB model and ranges up to AUD$5,899 for the 2TB version, is scheduled for release following the opening of Australian pre-orders on Friday, 16 October 2026, at 11 p.m. To facilitate these repairs, AppleCare+ is available for AUD$14.49 per month or AUD$144.99 per year, with a multi-device plan starting at AUD$29.99 per month.
