Apple Considers 2013 Mac Pro a Relic of the Past
“Trash Can” design now meets the end of official support.
The tech giant **Apple** has added the 2013 Mac Pro to its list of vintage products, signaling the end of an era for the uniquely designed machine. Discontinued in 2019, the cylindrical Mac Pro is now beyond guaranteed support.
Vintage Status Defined
According to **Apple**, a product is considered vintage when the company stopped distributing it for sale more than five years ago. For owners of these devices, finding replacement parts or receiving hardware support from **Apple** becomes increasingly difficult.
A Design Departure
The 2013 Mac Pro stood out with its cylindrical design, a significant departure from previous models. Its innovative cooling system was initially praised. However, its shape limited user upgrades, leading to its eventual replacement by a more conventional, rectangular design in 2019, which some observers likened to a cheese grater.
Other Devices Join the List
Alongside the 2013 Mac Pro, **Apple** has also added other devices to its vintage and obsolete lists:
Devices Now Considered Obsolete:
- AirPort Express (2nd generation)
- AirPort Time Capsules (2TB and 3TB versions)
- AirPort Extreme 802.11ac
The End of the Line
Products move to obsolete status when **Apple** stopped selling them more than seven years prior. Hardware support completely ceases for obsolete devices. As of 2023, over 68 million metric tons of e-waste were generated globally, with less than 20% being properly recycled, underscoring the environmental impact of obsolete electronics (Statista).
