Antoine Opens Up About His Real Relationship With Johnny Hallyday

Antoine Opens Up About His Real Relationship With Johnny Hallyday

November 5, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Singer Antoine is revisiting the origins of his public rivalry with French rock icon Johnny Hallyday, which followed the release of his breakout 1966 single “Les Élucubrations.” The track, which catapulted Antoine to fame with its provocative lyrics, famously suggested that Hallyday should be locked in a cage at the Médrano circus.

From Fan to Provocateur

Before the musical rivalry emerged, Antoine was an ardent fan of Hallyday. He recalls collecting posters of the rock star in Annecy and even braving a winter chill outside a theater in Grenoble to secure an autograph. However, his admiration cooled a few years later when he felt Hallyday had moved away from rock music. Antoine explains that he wrote the song to moquer gentiment (gently mock) the star, insisting he held pas vraiment d’animosité toward him.

The tension grew after the song became an unexpected commercial success. According to Antoine, people in Hallyday’s circle fueled the fire by telling the rock icon that he was being targeted. Hallyday responded with his own track, “Cheveux longs et idées courtes,” which referenced the cage anecdote from Antoine’s lyrics. Antoine views this exchange as de bonne guerre—all part of the game.

A Cordial Reality

Despite the media-driven narrative of a feud, Antoine maintains that the two remained on good terms. He recounts a meeting in a Marseille nightclub shortly after the song’s release, where Hallyday approached him and said, j’adore ta chanson. During that encounter, Hallyday was wearing a floral shirt, which was Antoine’s signature style.

The public perception of animosity was so strong that acquaintances occasionally intervened. Antoine recalls an instance where either Jean-Marie Périer or Sam Bernett locked the two musicians in a room, demanding they reconcile before leaving. In reality, their relationship was friendly enough that years later, Hallyday reached out to Antoine for advice on purchasing a boat. Reflecting on the interaction, Antoine noted: Je lui ai conseillé un voilier superbe, mais il a acheté un bateau à moteur.
