Anthropic lost 81 miljard dollar in H1 2026, per Reuters/De Tijd
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic recorded a net loss of 81 miljard dollar in the first half of 2026, driven largely by non-cash accounting charges tied to convertible notes, according to a draft prospectus for an upcoming initial public offering cited by Reuters and reported by De Tijd.
A staggering leap in paper losses
The first-half deficit dwarfs the 13 miljard dollar net loss the San Francisco-based startup posted during the same period a year earlier.
Rapid revenue acceleration meets capital constraints
The scale of that infrastructure buildout highlights the immense capital required to remain competitive in the generative AI sector. During an investor meeting on October 14, executives reported that third-quarter revenue rose 45 percent to 16,8 miljard dollar compared to the previous quarter. That followed a period where revenue more than doubled from 11,6 miljard dollar between the first and second quarters of the year, bolstered by the commercial adoption of Claude Code, a programming assistant used by developers to write software and build applications. Even with this top-line acceleration, some market participants expressed caution over what they viewed as a decelerating growth rate on a quarter-over-quarter basis.
Anthropic spends billions on computing capacity and infrastructure
Infrastructure expenditure continues to mount alongside revenue gains. Anthropic’s preliminary S-1 filing indicates the company spent nearly 9 miljard dollar on computing capacity and infrastructure during the first half of 2026, up from 2,3 miljard dollar a year prior. The company has committed to spending at least 518 miljard dollar over a ten-year horizon on cloud services, computing power, and underlying hardware.
Financial obligations draw scrutiny ahead of public offering
These massive financial obligations have drawn scrutiny from competitors and investors alike. Major technology firms including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft view the Claude developer as a direct competitor and have placed limits on the compute resources allocated to shared projects. Market observers note that a lukewarm reception to Anthropic’s expected November public offering could exert downward pressure on the broader technology sector, particularly as investors weigh whether multi-billion-dollar outlays in chips and data centers will generate sufficient long-term yield. The upcoming market debut serves as a crucial valuation test ahead of potential public listings by competing AI labs.
Anthropic logs operational loss for 2025
For 2025, Anthropic previously logged a net loss of 42 miljard dollar, driven by similar accounting adjustments on convertible instruments. Without those non-cash charges, the company posted an operational loss of approximately 8,1 miljard dollar on 4,6 miljard dollar in revenue for the full prior year.
