Yankees‘ anthony Volpe Faces Months of Recovery After Shoulder Surgery
NEW YORK – New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe underwent surgery too repair a partially torn left shoulder labrum less than a week after the team’s elimination from the Division Series by the Toronto Blue jays, potentially sidelining him for a important portion of the 2026 season. The surgery may explain a marked decline in Volpe’s performance during the 2025 season.
Volpe, who earned a Gold Glove Award as a rookie, saw his batting average drop to .212 in 2025 after hitting .243 the previous year. He also struggled defensively at shortstop. Despite the downturn, Yankees manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman publicly supported Volpe.
“It’s unknown just how much of Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe’s dismal 2025 season can be attributed to playing from May through the playoffs in October with a partially torn left shoulder labrum,” Randy Miller wrote for NJ.com.
Recovery from the surgery is typically estimated to take six to nine months, according to Dr. Spencer Stein,a sports orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone Health. “Recovery from surgery is usually six-to-nine months, so he’d probably miss at least the first few months of the season,” Stein projected, as reported by Miller. “Anytime that you’re fixing something like a labrum, it may heal in three or four months. But then to really get your strength back, everybody’s different, but I would estimate six-to-nine months.”
If recovery takes the full nine months, Volpe may not be able to return until shortly before the All-Star break. This could force the Yankees to consider Jose caballero as thier everyday shortstop to start the season or explore other options to bolster the roster. The team is currently evaluating Volpe’s initial recovery before making any decisions about the opening day lineup.
