Lawsuit Filed in Death of Soul Singer Angie Stone, citing Driver Negligence and Faulty Truck System
BIRMINGHAM, AL – A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the children of soul singer Angie Stone, along with a survivor of the March traffic accident that claimed her life, against multiple parties including the drivers of the vehicles involved, the owners of the bus and truck, and the truck’s manufacturer. The suit alleges negligence and a failure of safety systems contributed to the fatal crash.
Stone, 63, died following an accident in March while traveling by bus with her entourage after a performance in Alabama. While initial reports indicated all passengers survived the immediate impact, Stone was fatally injured when a sugar-laden truck collided with the van she was in as she attempted to exit. Five of the nine passengers were initially helped from the vehicle by bystanders.
The lawsuit details that the driver of the van lost control of the vehicle, a Mercedes Sprinter, and struck a guardrail while attempting to re-enter the highway. However, the complaint further alleges the driver of the truck involved was wearing headphones, listening to music, and traveling at approximately 68 miles per hour (110 kilometers per hour) when it struck Stone’s van.
Prosecutors contend the truck’s warning system, wich should have alerted the driver to the disabled van, was malfunctioning. The suit names Stone’s children, Diamond Stone and Michael Archer, and one of the accident survivors as plaintiffs.
angie Stone began her career in 1979 with the hip-hop group The Sequence, lauded by Rolling Stone as “the first ladies of hip-hop,” and achieved success with the song Funk You Up. She later transitioned to a solo career in R&B and soul, releasing her debut album Black Diamond in 1999. Her tenth and final album, Love Language, was re-released in 2023.
Just weeks before the accident, Stone posted on Instagram expressing excitement about a new phase in her career, stating, “Everything I don’t want to reveal yet…But you can see that there is a big smile on my face.”
The defendants have yet to respond to the indictment.
