Angels Name Kurt Suzuki as New Manager
Anaheim, CA – The Los Angeles Angels have hired Kurt Suzuki as their new manager, according to reports from the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. Suzuki, a former big league catcher and current special assistant with the Angels, will take the helm of the team instantly.
The hiring concludes a search that initially focused on former Angels stars. Albert Pujols was considered a frontrunner for the position, but negotiations stalled on October 20th, as the Angels and Pujols were unable to reach an agreement on contract terms and staffing, including coaches and resources, according to Heyman and The Athletic’s Sam blum. Longtime Angels outfielder Torii Hunter was also a candidate but was removed from consideration on the same day.
Beyond the former players, the Angels reportedly considered experienced managers Rocco Baldelli, Brandon Hyde, and Los Angeles third base coach Bo Porter, who previously managed the Houston Astros. It remains unclear whether the team formally interviewed these candidates or if suzuki’s candidacy quickly became the focus.
Further details regarding Suzuki’s coaching staff and introductory press conference will be released in the coming days.
