Android 17’s New Feature Outshines iPhone: Users Love the Latest Update

April 6, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Google has introduced a new AI-driven feature for Android devices that allows users to identify and interact with on-screen content through a specialized “Circle to Search” functionality. The tool enables users to highlight any text, image, or video element by circling it with their finger or stylus, triggering an immediate Google Search without requiring the user to leave the active application.

Integration of Generative AI in Interface Navigation

The feature leverages the integration of Google’s generative AI models to analyze the visual data of the screen in real-time. Unlike traditional search methods that require typing keywords or taking a screenshot to upload to a separate app, this system operates as an overlay. Once the user activates the feature via a long press of the home button or navigation bar, the interface freezes, allowing for a precise selection of the object or text in question.

This capability is designed to streamline the transition between content consumption and information retrieval. For instance, if a user encounters an unfamiliar piece of clothing in a social media video or a specific landmark in a photo, the tool identifies the object and provides shopping links or geographical data instantly.

Technical Deployment and Device Availability

The functionality was first deployed on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series and the Google Pixel 8 Pro, though Google has since expanded the rollout to a broader range of compatible Android devices. The system relies on a deep integration between the Android operating system and Google’s search algorithms to ensure that the visual recognition is accurate across different apps and resolutions.

While Apple’s iOS offers similar visual search capabilities through Google Lens or Apple’s own visual lookup tools, the Android implementation differs by removing the need to capture a static image first. The “Circle to Search” mechanism functions as a native system-level gesture, making the process faster than the multi-step workflow found on competing platforms.

User Adoption and Functional Scope

Initial user feedback indicates a high adoption rate for the tool’s ability to translate foreign text on the fly and identify products. The feature does not merely provide a link to a search result but often offers a curated set of options, including similar items or related information, directly within the overlay.

Google continues to refine the AI’s ability to distinguish between overlapping objects on a screen, aiming to reduce the number of false positives during the selection process.
