Andreessen Horowitz renames crypto fund to a16z Frontier
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) is dropping “crypto” from the name of its investment arm, rebranding its a16z Crypto fund to a16z Frontier in a shift that broadens the Silicon Valley firm’s focus toward artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
The venture capital giant, recognized as one of crypto’s most influential backers, is making the change to target startups developing technologies and markets that may take years to mature. General partner Chris Dixon announced the rebrand in a Thursday blog post, noting that the decision reflects a wider pivot among venture capital firms that established their reputations in crypto but are now looking beyond digital assets.
A16z Frontier Expands Scope to Include Artificial Intelligence
The transition to a16z Frontier marks the latest instance of a major crypto investor widening its scope toward artificial intelligence and emerging tech. Despite dropping the term from the fund’s title, Dixon emphasized that the firm is not walking away from digital assets.

According to Dixon, the firm will maintain its support for crypto companies and continue to participate in U.S. policy debates regarding digital asset oversight. This is an expansion: we will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation,
Dixon wrote in the blog post.
Venture Capital Footprint
Prior to the rebrand, Andreessen Horowitz shaped the crypto industry by pouring billions of dollars into crypto startups. The VC firm was an early investor in Coinbase and backed prominent blockchain projects including Solana (SOL) as well as the decentralized exchange Uniswap (UNI).

The company’s shift to a16z Frontier places it alongside other venture capital giants that are adjusting their investment strategies to encompass a broader range of forward-looking technologies alongside their established crypto portfolios.
