UEFA Weighs Security Concerns as Sheriff Tiraspol Match Location Remains Uncertain

Brussels – Uncertainty surrounds the location of Sporting CP’s upcoming Europa League qualifying match against sheriff Tiraspol, as UEFA assesses security risks associated with playing in the self-declared Moldovan Republic of Transnistria. The potential for the match to be moved from Tiraspol, the region’s capital, is high, prompting logistical challenges for both teams and supporters.

Transnistria: A Region in Limbo

Tiraspol resides in a delicate geopolitical situation. The Moldovan Republic of Transnistria, where Tiraspol is located, is an internationally unrecognized secessionist entity. The region’s demographics are diverse, with 41.6 % of the population identifying as russian,33 % as Ukrainian, and 15.2 % as Moldovan, according to recent data. This complex ethnic makeup contributes to the region’s instability.

Playing in Tiraspol: Not Prohibited, But Discouraged

UEFA has not explicitly prohibited the match from taking place in Tiraspol, but strongly advises against it. The Sheriff typically plays at Sheriff Stadium, which has a capacity of 14,000. Anderlecht previously won 1-2 at this stadium in 2001. Though, the Belgian government’s diplomatic website cautions against all travel to Transnistria, stating that security cannot be guaranteed due to the lack of control exercised by Moldovan authorities.

Recent Precedents and Option Locations

FC Utrecht, Sheriff’s previous opponent, faced similar concerns and ultimately played their match in Nisporeni, a peaceful town 70 kilometers from the Moldovan capital, Chisinau. The match concluded with a 1-3 victory for utrecht. nisporeni’s Centrul Tineret și Sportis de Nisporeni stadium holds 5,000 spectators, and saw a significant turnout of Dutch supporters.

Chisinau offers a more convenient option, with the Zimbru Stadium (capacity 10,000) and more comfortable hotel accommodations. However, traveling to Nisporeni from Chisinau International Airport presents challenges, including poor road conditions and high temperatures, as experienced by Utrecht players during their recent visit.

Logistical Hurdles for sporting CP

Sporting CP is awaiting UEFA’s final decision and has already booked flights to Chisinau.Coach Besnik Hasi acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating, “It will be a very complicated trip,” and expressing uncertainty about the final match location. The team faces the possibility of playing in either Tiraspol, Nisporeni, or Chisinau.
