Anchorage Braces for Another Round of Snow This Weekend

anchorage residents are preparing for another notable snowfall event, with a system tracking in from the Gulf of Alaska expected to bring 5 to 10 inches of snow beginning Friday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch extending through Sunday morning, though the heaviest accumulations are anticipated at higher elevations.

Potential Impacts and Timing

Meteorologist Daniel Johnston of the NWS Anchorage office anticipates the snowfall will begin Friday evening, potentially complicating the commute. Winds gusting between 20 and 30 miles per hour will accompany the snow, reducing visibility and creating blowing snow conditions. This combination of factors could make travel hazardous. While a foot of snow is possible in higher elevations, most of anchorage and the Mat-Su Borough are expected to receive less.

following a Record-Breaking snowfall

This upcoming storm follows closely on the heels of a recent, record-breaking snowfall that blanketed Anchorage with over 19 inches of snow between Sunday and Tuesday. Despite the substantial accumulation, schools and city services remained largely operational. The Anchorage School District experienced some minor disruptions on Thursday, with delayed school bus pickups due to the lingering cold temperatures.

Temperature Shift and Relief

The approaching storm is expected to bring a welcome change in temperature. After a frigid Thursday, with the Anchorage International Airport recording a high of minus 9 degrees Fahrenheit, temperatures are forecast to rise. Highs in the mid-20s and lows in the low teens are predicted for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, offering a respite from the recent extreme cold.

Looking Ahead: Next Week’s Forecast

While additional snow is possible next week, forecasters do not anticipate a storm of the magnitude that recently impacted Juneau. The severe weather in Juneau, which included sinking boats, collapsing roofs, and widespread disruption,is not expected to be replicated in Anchorage.

Preparing for Winter Weather

Anchorage residents are encouraged to prepare for the upcoming snowfall by:

  • Allowing extra travel time.
  • Exercising caution while driving.
  • Ensuring vehicles are equipped with appropriate tires.
  • Staying informed about the latest weather updates from the National Weather Service.

Staying informed and taking necessary precautions will help ensure a safe weekend despite the anticipated winter weather.
