Amir Controversy: Festival Pulls Back, Boujenah Defends Singer’s Peace Message

Amir Addresses Controversy at Francofolies de Spa Amidst Artist Boycott Calls

Spa, Belgium – Franco-Israeli singer Amir found himself at the center of a meaningful controversy during his performance at the Francofolies de Spa festival. The situation escalated following the publication of an open letter by RTBF, in which a collective of artists expressed their discomfort with Amir’s inclusion in the festival lineup. These artists stated they “firmly dissociate themselves from the decision to program Amir,” citing his perceived lack of a public stance against “crimes committed by the Israeli government.”

Among the signatories of the open letter were artists Colt, Lovelace, Nicou, lauravioli, CHOSE, Nkey, SMR, Isaac, Libra Romea, and Mystery. Additionally, singer Yoa indicated she would withdraw from the festival if Amir, known for hits like “Retina,” remained on the program.

Despite the protest, festival organizers opted to retain Amir in the schedule. Addressing the audience from the stage, Amir conveyed a message of dialog and understanding. “I respect those who oppose me,” he stated. “But to be able to move forward, you have to know how to listen. To be able to progress towards peace, you have to know how to dialogue. As dialogue is clearly preferable to anathemas and boycott.” he emphasized the role of artists in setting an example, asserting, “I believe that it is very vital to use our artist’s place to be exemplary because I know only one response to hatred is art. And art is us,it’s you,it’s here,it’s now,it’s music. So as we are all there, gathered this evening,I dare to ask you that we do not sing in one voice and that this song rises much stronger than the tumult thank you.”

Amir’s remarks resonated with several public figures, including host Arthur and businesswoman Caroline Margeridon. More recently, actor michel Boujenah voiced his support for Amir, telling le Parisien, “He took a stand! For peace! Like me by the way! What is he singing, Amir? Love songs! He was almost in tears, his reaction really touched me…” Boujenah added, “it’s overwhelming what is happening in the Middle East, all civil death is horrible, all I can tell you here, thousands of kilometers is that I only wish peace.”

The Francofolies de Spa controversy highlights the complex intersection of artistic expression, political stances, and public discourse within the music industry, especially in times of international conflict. The debate surrounding artist boycotts and the responsibility of performers to address sociopolitical issues continues to be a recurring theme in cultural events worldwide.
