The American University women’s swimming and diving team secured a narrow 158-142 victory over UMBC in their first dual meet of the season on Wednesday, october 3rd. The Eagles demonstrated strength across multiple events, ultimately edging out their opponents in a closely contested competition.
This win marks a strong start for the AU swim and dive program, signaling potential for continued success as they navigate a challenging season. The team’s performance highlights both veteran leadership and promising contributions from incoming freshmen, setting a positive tone for upcoming tri-meets and competitions.
Kate Williams led the women’s team with a first-place finish in the 1,000 free, clocking in at 10:40.78. Abby Rothrock followed closely behind, securing second place with a time of 10:43.79. Claire Mosher contributed another victory for the Eagles, winning the 200 fly in 2:11.00, bringing the team’s total wins to nine.
On the men’s side, Luke Martens dominated the 1,000 free, winning by a significant margin of six and a half seconds with a time of 9:47.52. He later added a second-place finish in the 500 free to his tally.
The men’s 200 fly saw a complete sweep of the top three spots. Cole Coffman took first place at 1:55.02, followed by Ryan Tiffany at 1:58.24, and madan Morris at 2:01.76.
Freshman Alex Way showcased his diving talent, earning second place on the 1-meter board with a score of 221.50, a performance ranking 15th all-time at American University. He also secured third place on the 3-meter with a score of 222.60, placing 13th in AU’s all-time records.
