American Made reaches number four on HBO Max top 10 movie chart

Tom Cruise’s crime film American Made has climbed to the number four spot on HBO Max’s Top 10 movie chart, while Brendan Fraser’s 115-minute crime thriller No Sudden Move secured the seventh spot on the same SVOD platform in the United States.

Streaming Charts Elevate Two Contrasting 115-Minute Crime Films

The sudden prominence of these two projects on the HBO Max charts highlights a striking contrast in critical reception and audience engagement years after their initial theatrical and digital debuts. Directed by Doug Liman, American Made stars Tom Cruise as real-life pilot Barry Seal, who flew drugs for the Medellín Cartel while simultaneously acting as an informant for the CIA and DEA. Released in 2017 by Universal Pictures, the mid-budget $50 million film grossed over $134 million worldwide and earned an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, bgr.com reported. In stark contrast, Steven Soderbergh’s 1950s Detroit-set noir thriller No Sudden Move was released on HBO Max on July 1, 2021, and managed a near-perfect 92% critics’ score alongside a meager 59% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to screenrant.com.

Divergent Creative Approaches Fuel Different Viewer Reactions

While Cruise’s film leans into fast-paced direction, real-life criminal exploits, and a charismatic lead persona, Soderbergh’s star-studded feature takes a deliberate, slow-paced narrative route. No Sudden Move assembled a cast featuring Brendan Fraser, Benicio del Toro, Don Cheadle, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, Kieran Culkin, Amy Seimetz, Ray Liotta, and Matt Damon, following three minor criminals who stumble onto a major conspiracy involving city mob bosses, screenrant.com reported. Viewers historically pushed back against the 2021 release due to specific stylistic choices like the fisheye lens effect and the absence of high-octane action sequences typically expected from the genre. Despite those historical audience reservations, both titles now command prominent positions on the platform alongside other trending features like Mortal Kombat II, Sicario, and Green Lantern.

Production entities, talent management firms, and intellectual property holders adapting to the changing economics of digital distribution must evaluate how legacy catalog titles sustain long-term engagement.

Future Prospects Remain Unanswered on Streaming Longevity

It remains unconfirmed how long either film will retain its position within the top ten charts or whether this renewed visibility will translate into broader catalog valuations for Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Discovery. Neither studio has released updated metrics detailing total viewing hours for these specific catalog titles.
