Canadian Olympic Bronze Medalist Alysha Newman launches Clothing Line, Advocates for Equity in Athletics
PARIS – Alysha Newman, Canada’s first-ever Olympic medalist in women’s pole vault, is expanding her reach beyond the track, launching a clothing line and together advocating for greater financial accessibility in elite athletics. The announcement comes following Newman’s bronze medal win at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Saint-Denis, France, where she achieved a canadian-record height of 4.85 metres.
Newman’s initiative aims to dismantle the financial barriers that ofen prevent talented athletes from reaching their full potential. She believes that access to the Olympic level shouldn’t be contingent on wealth, and is using her platform to champion a more equitable landscape in sports. This dual pursuit – entrepreneurship and advocacy – underscores Newman’s commitment to both her athletic legacy and a lasting impact on the future of Canadian athletics.
The Olympic bronze medalist detailed the emotional weight of her achievement, stating, “and then, when I was on the podium, I felt the other side of it: the pride of being Canadian. Knowing that I had become the first woman from my country to ever take a medal in Stavsprang was overwhelming.”
Newman’s advocacy stems from a recognition that notable financial resources are often required to compete at the highest levels. “For too long, reaching the Olympic level requires not only talent and courage, but also a significant financial advantage,” she explained.
Her goal, she says,is to ensure future Olympians aren’t disadvantaged by their socioeconomic backgrounds. “my goal is simple: to make sure that no future Olympians are lagging behind because of the family or the circumstances they were born into,” Newman concluded.
