All Creatures Great and Small Tour Explores James Herriot’s Yorkshire Dales Filming Locations
Travelers and television fans can book an itinerary that explores the real-world locations behind the television adaptation All Creatures Great and Small. The excursion takes visitors into the Yorkshire Dales National Park to see the villages and landscapes featured in both the 1970s BBC series and the recent Channel 5 adaptation.
Yorkshire Dales Landscapes and Bolton Castle Scenes
The tour stops at Bolton Castle, a 14-century fortress in Wensleydale that previously served as a residence for Mary, Queen of Scots. In the recent Channel 5 version of the series, the castle’s gardens serve as the backdrop for James Herriot’s proposal to Helen. Visitors also travel to Aysgarth Falls, a natural landmark located nearby that appeared in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
The itinerary includes a stop at St Michaels & All Angels Church in the village of Hubberholme. The 12th-century structure sits by the River Wharfe and features medieval architecture alongside monastic chancel screens and pews carved by Robert Thompson, known as the Mouseman.
The church was used for filming the wedding and christening scenes of James and Helen Herriot.
Route Stops at Yockenthwaite Farm and Wensleydale Creamery
The route features a photo stop at Yockenthwaite Farm, a traditional Yorkshire Dales sheep farm that doubles as Heston Grange—the home of Helen and the Alderson family in the Channel 5 series. Travelers also visit the Wensleydale Creamery in the center of the Yorkshire Dales. The facility houses a flagship visitor experience and cheese shop offering artisanal cheeses, including traditional Yorkshire Wensleydale and varieties blended with cranberries and apricots.
The excursion runs through the core settings that defined James Herriot’s stories, placing visitors directly into the rural Yorkshire settings depicted on screen.
