Alex Scott steps down as Disney+ Women's Champions League presenter

Alex Scott steps down as Disney+ Women’s Champions League presenter

October 15, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

In a column for The Guardian, media personality and former England defender Alex Scott has stepped down from her role as a presenter for Disney+’s Women’s Champions League coverage, choosing instead to focus on independent projects such as her digital show, One More Word WSL.

Departure From Disney+ and Independent Media Ventures

Scott decided to walk away from the streaming platform’s broadcast team after fronting the elite European club competition since Disney secured its exclusive five-year broadcast rights in 2025. Her representatives confirmed the departure while noting that her relationship with Disney remains positive. Disney’s tournament coverage, produced by ESPN, features a presenting lineup that includes Shebahn Aherne, Nedum Onuoha, and Lianne Sanderson, alongside commentators Vicki Sparks and Jacqui Oatley. The competition is scheduled to resume on October 28.

The exit coincides with the launch of Scott’s new program, One More Word WSL, created through her production banner, First Cap Productions, alongside former international teammates Anita Asante and Fara Williams. Scott developed the independent show following the BBC’s cancellation of its weekly Women’s Super League highlights program, a decision she criticized earlier this month in the Observer for relying on persistent excuses regarding production costs and viewership figures.

Technical Glitches Draw Criticism for Disney Broadcasts

Disney’s entry into women’s football broadcasting faced immediate scrutiny after technical difficulties disrupted the opening round of matches. An unscheduled commercial break interrupted the second half of Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over HB Køge for more than three minutes, drawing sharp external criticism toward the network’s production standards.

Addressing the backlash in her recent media interviews, Scott acknowledged that she disagreed with several operational decisions made during the broadcasts. While noting that she offered advice to the production team behind the scenes, she stated that her influence had clear limits. A Disney+ spokesperson thanked Scott for her contributions to the tournament’s coverage, praising her passion for the women’s game.
