Greg Rusedski says Carlos Alcaraz must skip tournaments to manage calendar

Greg Rusedski says Carlos Alcaraz must skip tournaments to manage calendar

October 15, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Carlos Alcaraz won 60 million dollars last year including sponsorships, an amount British former player Greg Rusedski noted as sufficient for a lifetime while arguing that the 23-year-old Spaniard must skip tournaments to manage the demanding ATP calendar. Rusedski made the remarks in a podcast, pointing out that Alcaraz returned from a wrist injury to play the US Open, the Laver Cup, Tokyo, and Shanghai in quick succession.

Alcaraz Warns That Tournament Schedules Risk Breaking Players

Alcaraz spent 139 days away from competitive singles before returning at the US Open, where he defeated Roman Safiullin and Jaime Faria to advance. The player noted that competing in every mandatory Masters 1000 and Grand Slam forces athletes to play roughly 40 weeks a year. Back in October 2025 in Paris, Alcaraz warned that the volume of tournaments is too high, adding in a statement reported by tennisworldes.com that tournament schedules risk physically breaking players.

Rusedski Suggests Alcaraz Prioritize Preparation over Ranking Pressures

Rusedski contrasted Alcaraz’s current schedule management with the career path of Roger Federer, who played roughly 12 tournaments a year while maintaining a top-two ranking, and Novak Djokovic, who also organized his calendar carefully. Rusedski suggested that Alcaraz should ignore bonus money and ranking pressures, accepting fines or points drops to find proper preparation balance. The former player also questioned the current coaching setup under Samu López, arguing that former world number one and Grand Slam champion Juan Carlos Ferrero brought a level of professional circuit experience that would better guide Alcaraz through mandatory event rules and scheduling choices than López.
