Russian cross-country skier Aleksandr Bolshunov is facing potential punishment after an incident during a recent race in Russia involving fellow skier Alexei Bakurov. Bolshunov expressed dissatisfaction with Bakurov’s conduct during the competition, alleging unfair tactics. The situation has sparked controversy adn could result in Bolshunov being disqualified from multiple upcoming races.
This incident adds too a pattern of contentious moments for Bolshunov, a prominent figure in the world of cross-country skiing. Known for his competitive spirit, he has previously been involved in high-profile clashes with other athletes, including Johannes Høsflot Klæbo at the 2021 World Championships and separate incidents in 2022 and last winter. The latest event raises questions about sportsmanship and fair play within the Russian ski community and could impact Bolshunov’s participation in future competitions.
Bolshunov voiced his frustration to Rossiya 1 TV channel, stating, “I want a fair duel from start to finish. I didn’t like Bakurov’s attitude during the race.” He also preemptively acknowledged the possibility of severe consequences,saying,”They’re probably going to disqualify me from five races now,because I’m probably the athlete everyone loves and wants to take things out on. I take the brunt,no matter how hard it is.”
The incident echoes a similar situation at the 2021 World Championship five-mile race, where a collision with Klæbo resulted in Bolshunov breaking a ski pole and Klæbo losing the gold medal.Emil Iversen ultimately won gold, with Bolshunov taking silver. Further controversies include running down Finnish skier Joni Mäki during a 2022 World cup relay finish and a dispute with Sergej Ustyugov in the Russian Ski Cup last winter.
