Neymar is expected to return to competitive play next week for Al-Hilal, marking his comeback after a year sidelined by a serious knee injury. The Brazilian forward is slated to feature in the AFC Champions League Elite match against Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates, according to a statement released Saturday by his marketing company, NR Sports.
The injury, a ruptured meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, occurred while on international duty with Brazil in October 2023, shortly after joining the Saudi Arabian club for a reported $90 million transfer. He had played only five games for Al-Hilal before the injury necessitated surgery.
“Though there’s no final decision for his return, the number 10 will be able to play on Monday to carry on with his remarkable trajectory,” NR Sports stated, referencing the match against Al-Ain. The statement emphasized Neymar’s dedication to recovery and his ambition to participate in future World Cups.
Al-Hilal recently drew 1-1 with Al-Ittihad in a Saudi Pro League match on February 21st, and is scheduled to face Al Taawoun on February 24th, followed by a match against Al-Shabab on February 27th. The club is currently at the top of the Saudi Pro League standings.
The anticipated return comes as Al-Hilal navigates a demanding schedule. The club recently withdrew from the 2025 Saudi Super Cup, citing extreme player fatigue following their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. Al-Hilal argued that the short break between competitions did not provide players with the mandated 28 days of annual exit, as stipulated by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). Medical reviews confirmed “extreme fatigue” among players after a year of continuous competition.
Al-Hilal’s decision to withdraw from the Super Cup has sparked debate regarding player welfare within the Saudi Pro League. The SAFF may impose fines of up to SAR 500,000, and Al-Ahli is expected to take Al-Hilal’s place in the tournament.
In February, Al-Hilal also announced the extension of Kalidou Koulibaly’s contract until 2027 and unveiled a special edition Founding Day kit in collaboration with PUMA, honoring Saudi Arabia’s heritage. The club continues to invest in its youth program, with 66 talents currently supporting Al-Hilal’s youth teams.
